As we continue our growth into the Midlands and North we managed to catch up with the regions Lead Engineer, Kam Sandhu, to discuss the changes happening operationally, finding out how we can stay ahead of the growth, and seeing what makes him tick.

In a few sentences briefly describe your career roles to date

I started on a five year apprenticeship, the first year was mechanically focussed and the remainder electrical. I worked on industrial manufacturing plant and anything to do with the building’s infrastructure with a team of Engineers. Then moved on to be self-employed working with my family and finally moved into facilities maintenance.

I have worked on some very large corporate buildings and a few very interesting MOD sites. I joined Hemlow in December 2018 as a Mobile Engineer and within 8 months I was promoted to Lead Engineer.

What inspired you to pursue a career in engineering?

I have always enjoyed taking things apart and seeing how they work. My father was a mechanical engineer and would always involve me when he did repairs so I think it started from there.

What is your biggest achievement to date – professionally or personal?

Personally, my biggest achievement has been my children. I have a daughter, Kiran and son, Kamraj.

What does a typical day look like for you?

Every morning I get up and have my ginger biscuits and a cup of tea with my wife whilst watching the news. That is about the only thing consistent in my day as no day is the same. From there I head to the office or straight to site to support the engineers. Since my promotion I spend more time in the office reviewing work orders, quotes and providing updates to clients. I am also working on our health and safety practices across the region to ensure consistency.

“We have a lot of different characters within the team and working with them all is interesting and helps to develop my own leadership skills.”

If you could switch jobs with someone for a day, who would it be?

If I could do anything I would be a tourist blogger and I would spend my time travelling. I would love to explore the world and see all the obscure beautiful places.

What is the biggest professional challenge you have overcome?

When I worked in an industrial manufacturing plant I was only 22 and was given the responsibility for all plant and production in the factory. This was very daunting for me at this age but a great opportunity which pushed me. If anything would break down it would be my sole responsibility to fix it and get the plant back up and working. Any downtime was money lost in production.

What do you like most about your job?

I enjoy the variety of work and working with the engineers. We have a lot of different characters within the team and working with them all is interesting and helps to develop my own leadership skills.

What advice would you give to any new engineers joining Hemlow? Or anyone considering a career in engineering

Engineering is very interesting and you can make a good wage. It is satisfying work!

Hemlow is a great company to work for because it has the small business mentality. There is a lot of recognition from management and great job satisfaction.

Finally tell us something that you enjoying doing outside of work in your spare time?

I enjoy spending as much time outdoors as possible, even in the Winter. Most weekends you will find me in the garden, chatting to the neighbours or washing the cars.
